The two men shot and killed in Acampo on Friday night have been identified as a father and son.

The victims were Jonathan Meagher, 48, and his father, William Robert Meagher, 84, according to Deputy Les Garcia with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies have arrested Howard Daniel Smith in connection with the killings. Police encountered Smith, 40, in a blue Ford Ranger pickup truck when they responded to the shooting.

A brief pursuit ensued, which ended when Smith's Ranger collided with another vehicle on Highway 99 and ended up in a ditch. He was taken into custody without incident.

Garcia said Smith, who is also known as "Turtle," was recently released from prison, although information on previous offenses was not available. Smith has been charged with two counts of homicide, as well as attempted murder, burglary and violation of parole. He is currently ineligible for bail.

The identity of a third shooting victim, who was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, has still not been released. The third victim suffered a foot injury, according to Liberty Fire District Chief Stan Seifert.

According to Jonathan Meagher's MySpace profile, he was formerly a truck driver and graduated from Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. The profile lists his religion as Catholic, and "Purple Rain," "American Graffiti" and "Monster's, Inc." among his favorite movies.

He also seemed to enjoy the rural nature of his neighborhood.

"It's nice and quiet out here, no nagging neighbors or screaming kids and no loud traffic or sirens every 5 mins," Jonathan Meagher wrote in the "About Me" section of his profile. "Just down to earth country living, away from the city lights. Where the moon and stars shine bright at nite. ..."

Garcia declined to comment on any possible motive in the shooting, or the type of firearm used.

Smith is scheduled to appear in Stockton court this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

LNS it is bad enough what happened to this gentleman and his father...but then to use his my space profile instead of actually investigating is pretty lazy ,and you don't even edit what you report . you have his father listed as 84 and 78 years old !! I notice spelling errors every day in print and online, you don't have spell check? It is sad that today we have repeaters not reporters!
