To signify the status of deceased veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs now offers free bronze medallions to service men and women whose death occurred on or after Nov. 1, 1990.
The medallions are inscribed with the word “Veteran” across the top and the branch of service on the bottom. By request, they are available for graves marked with a privately purchased headstone.
Maria Elena Serna, family service counselor at Lodi Memorial Cemetery, said many veterans’ graves have gone without American flags on Memorial Day since private headstones don’t indicate service in the military. To ensure veterans are recognized, the cemetery is offering assistance in obtaining the medallions.
For more information about the medallions, visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website or call Maria Elena Serna at the cemetery at 209-333-7171 or 209-327-4344.
