Visitors to Lodi Lake on Monday afternoon may have seen a red high-heel shoe "walk on water," a velociraptor surf, a floating camp site, Noah's ark and a cow, among other interesting items, on the lake.
These items were all boats made of milk cartons for the second annual Milk Carton Regatta put on by the Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club at the 4th at the Lake Independence Day festival on Monday. This year, there were seven entries: Lodi Boy Scout Troop No. 291, Jim Elliot Christian High School Robotics Team, Bear Creek High School Marching Band, Temple Baptist Church, Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club, Lodi Podiatry and Habañero Hots.
Kevin Giannecchini, Andrew Balthazar, Nick DelHierro and Cameron Davis floated their campsite with pontoons into first place during the first heat of the race. Their boat was comprised of 597 wax milk cartons, according to Davis, 17, and it took two weeks to make. It was a tent on a board with side rails, a troop flag and an American flag waving at the back.
"It was fun," said Andrew, 12, who looks forward to making the boat again next year. "We all had to work together to make it."
Jim Elliot Christian High School Robotics Team students were pleased to get first place for boat design. Juliane Diaz, Sarah Hoh, Cody Milne, and Jackie Neal tested out their boat at the lake on Sunday before entering the race. Their boat was blue with a wave, a surfboard, and the robotics team mascot -- a velociraptor -- on the surfboard.
The boat built by Temple Baptist Church, Noah's ark, came in second place for design. It was brown with animals painted on the inside and outside.
"It was really fun to be able to do somehting in front of the whole city," said boat rider Brandon Ivy, who added that it took about a month to complete the boat.
First place winners for speed and design received $200; second place recipients received $175; and second heat participants received a plaque.
"It's all about fun," said Rotary member Chuck Correa. "Not a boat sank."
