Union Pacific Railroad's non-profit agency, Operation Lifesaver, will be one of two special guests this week for the Downtown Lodi Business Partnership's "Shop Sunday" campaign. From 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the post office plaza on School Street, Operation Lifesaver will be giving away prizes to children and hosting a computerized train simulator with levers and whistles for youths to play with.
Roger's Railroad Junction & Hobbies on Sacramento Street will have model trains on display at a separate booth as well. "Shop Sunday" is free and open to the public.
Lodi Unified School District teachers recognized
Two Lodi Unified School District teachers were among those who received countywide teacher awards at an event sponsored by San Joaquin A+ on Thursday.
Jill Bratton, Lawrence Elementary School's literacy coach, was honored for her efforts in modeling lessons to teachers to assist them with their teaching skills.
Theresa Randall, a seventh-grade teacher at Christa McAuliffe Middle School, makes math come alive and gets her 180 students to turn in 100 percent of their homework.
The other nine teachers honored are Heidi Bensley, Linden High School District; Jacqueline Kron, Manteca Unified School District; Kelly Christian, Stockton Unified School District; Rebecca Sprinkle, Lincoln Unified School District; Lynn Huggins, Tracy Unified School District; Todd Foss, Stockton Unified School District; Derrick Hodges, Aspire Public Schools; Karen Plott, Escalon Unified School District; and Dean Medek, Tracy Unified School District.
The San Joaquin A+ Teacher Award honors educators in the county which have shown the ability to set high standards for their students as well as model to them the habits and attitudes of successful adults, according to a press release.
Lodi Unified School District pentathlon team wins 13 medals
The only Lodi Unified School District team to compete at the recent San Joaquin County Academic Pentathlon came home with 13 medals.
Additionally, Morada Middle School placed second in the oral competition of the Super Quiz.
This year's topic was pre-Civil War growth and conflict. Students take written quizzes in math, literature, essay, science and social science.
The 21 members of the team included eighth-grade students: Ashley Nguyen, Joseph Hernandez, Angelique Gray, Haffed Ali, Anna Low, Kevin Nguyen, Philysia Gibson, Cole Her, Pheng Her, Carmen Chan, Anna Ho, Ahlea Castro, Kyla Mercado, Jessica Inn, Simarjit Singh, Ben Selfaison, Lynda Chao, Crystal Xiong, Ruani Tafola, Summer Malone and Ciara Manglicmot.
The pentathlon competition was held May 1 at East Union High School in Manteca.
Rep. Jerry McNerney to appear in Stockton today
Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, will hold a "Congress at Your Corner" from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at the Cesar Chavez Central Library, 605 N. El Dorado St., Stockton.
The public is invited to share opinions with McNerney and ask him questions.
