A 61-year-old Antioch man was killed in a head-on collision early Sunday morning by a suspected drunken driver on Highway 12 east of Peatland Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Law enforcement officials have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of family members.
The collision, which involved four cars, took place at 1:32 a.m., when Phi Nguyen of Stockton, 49, crashed into the victim’s 2001 Cadillac head on, according to CHP Sgt. David Wharry. Nguyen was driving his 2002 Toyota east on Highway 12, while the victim was headed west, Wharry said.
According to a CHP report, Nguyen swerved into the westbound lane and crashed into the victim’s car before crashing into the left-front of a 2004 Volkswagen driven by Anthony Russo of Pittsburg, 22. Russo and Nguyen were taken to San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp with major injuries, according to the report, written by Wharry.
Nguyen was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the CHP.
The driver of a fourth car, Kyle Arredondo, 21, of Brentwood, was not injured. He continued west on Highway 12 as debris struck the front of his 2003 Acura.
Sunday’s collision was the second to take place this month on Highway 12 near Peatland Road. On April 3, Jeffrey Herbertof Stockton, 38, was killed when a semi-trailer struck a Chevrolet Blazer.
