DELTA COLLEGE - The veranda outside of Warren Atherton Auditorium at Middle College High School was filled with excitement as 50 lively graduates waited to walk across the stage and receive their High School diplomas Saturday morning.
"You have a small group of people to pick as your friends so you might as well have everyone be your friends." said Julie Lin, 18, of Middle College's small class size. Lin will be attending college at San Francisco State for Business in the fall.
Dressed in black robes and wearing awkward graduation caps with golden tassels the students made their way into Warren Atherton Auditorium. Parents, family and friends cheered as the graduates walked a long set of lit stairs and onto an empty stage.
After welcomes, remarks and awards were handed out Mandy Jin, the classes spunky salutatorian, took to the podium. Jin spoke with fond memories and inside jokes to the audience about her year at the school. To conclude her speech Jin started to sing Desmond Dekker's "You can get it if you really want". Jin was quickly joined in by the rest of her graduating class.
The Valedictorian Viren Patel then stepped up to the podium. A few serious words about his passed years spent with classmates were spoken. Patel's speech then joined the fun filled ranks of Jin's and talked about fun times and memorable moments. "There is one final lesson that we all have learned, what is this golden rule? We could tell you but we'd have to kill you." said Patel. The crowd laughed.
The students then received their diplomas and were declared graduated. The students left the auditorium and were alone in the entrance area. As a true testament to Middle College's class spirit, the graduates once alone and away from the crowd all at once began dancing, high-fiving and jumping up and down to each other's "Congratulations" and " We did it!"
