Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, introduced a bill called the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011, which is intended to reduce unemployment among veterans. McNerney co-authored the legislation with Reps. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, Sanford Bishop, D-Georgia, C.W. Bill Young, R-Florida and Norm Dicks, D-Washington.
Companion legislation was introduced in the Senate earlier this year.
The bill would allow every veteran to participate in the Transition Assistance Program, encourage federal agencies to hire veterans and provide vocational rehabilitation benefits.
