Lodi City Council debates sales tax hike

On Wednesday night, the City Council heard public comments and deliberated on adding a new one-eighth cent sales tax measure to the November voting ballot. Lodi citizens would then vote to add .125 percent to their sales tax. With a required two-thirds majority vote, the estimated $1.3 million annual revenue would be earmarked for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) expenses.

Currently, the sales tax is set at 8 percent, with 1 percent of that going to the city. This new proposal would make the sales tax 8.125 percent. According to a recent survey of Lodians conducted by a consulting firm, at least 79 percent of respondents said they considered the following actions as “very important” or “somewhat important”:
