School bus driver’s civil suit trial continues

Administrators from the Lodi Unified School District are being questioned this week in a civil court trial involving former school bus driver Richard Dale Evans.

Evans, who was previously sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old special-needs student, is being sued on behalf of the girl. School district officials allegedly has a policy of not watching the video footage recorded by cameras on its school buses and had refused to review the footage upon a direct request from the victim's parents, attorneys say.

District personnel director Neil Young and Len Casanega, who was interim superintendent in 2008, are scheduled to testify today, according to Ken Meleyco, an attorney representing the girl's family.

On Friday, Richard Swanson, a former school district superintendent from Tehachapi, is scheduled to testify about proper hiring procedures, Meleyco said. Meleyco predicts that closing arguments will take place Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
