A big rig ran a stop sign and struck a vehicle, killing the passenger and seriously injuring the driver at an intersection in Lockeford on Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At around 7:05 a.m., James White, 66, of Lake Port, was driving a 2000 Peterbilt big rig east on Brandt Road toward the intersection of Clements Road at about 40 to 45 miles per hour, according to the CHP. Officers reported that White failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the passenger side of a 1996 Ford car traveling south on Clements Road at about 50 to 55 mph.

White’s big rig pushed the Ford, carrying two people, into an embankment, the CHP said.

The driver of the Ford, Linda Carter, 63, of Modesto, sustained major non-life threatening injuries and was transferred to San Joaquin General Hospital. The passenger, a 64-year-old man from Modesto, was also transferred to San Joaquin General, but died as a result of his injuries, according to the CHP.

White was transferred to Lodi Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. White was not arrested, and officers don’t believe alcohol was a factor in the collision. The CHP is continuing to investigate the collision.
