Students at Lake Canyon Elementary School welcomed a special visit Friday morning.
Congressman Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, visited the school to honor Galt Joint Union Elementary School District recently being named one of the Race to the Top Districts in the country.
The district will receive nearly $10 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
McNerney planned to visit the school to learn how the district will utilize the funding. He also presented Superintendent Karen Schauer a certificate honoring their achievement.
The Department of Education announced late last year that 16 applicants — representing 55 school districts across 11 states and the District of Columbia — were awarded grants in the 2012 Race to the Top District competition. These districts will share nearly $400 million to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers.
The Galt district had to submit a plan, collaborating with educators, parents, and both public and private organizational leaders, to demonstrate how the grant would help the schools to grow and improve at the local level.
