Christa McAuliffe Middle School social studies teacher Charles Taylor was not selected as this year's San Joaquin County Teacher of the Year.

That honor went to Tracy High School science teacher Kirk Brown, who will now go on to compete for the state teacher of the year award. He was honored Thursday at the county Office of Education's annual Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year awards celebration.

Taylor was one of five finalists this year after being chosen as Lodi Unified's teacher of the year.

"All of the nominees deserve recognition for their exceptional commitment to their students," San Joaquin County Deputy Superintendent Gary Dei Rossi said in a written statement. "We are truly blessed to have educator's like Kirk and the other finalists advocating for our students."
