The San Joaquin County Coroner's Office has identified the 84-year-old woman killed on Highway 12 west of Lodi as Phyllis Lawyer, of Modesto.
Lawyer was a passenger in a 2000 Kia Sportage that at about 12:55 p.m. Sept. 18 was hit head-on west of Tower Park Marina, according to the California Highway Patrol. She died a short time later at Lodi Memorial Hospital; however, her identity wasn't released for eight days after she died.
The driver of the Kia, Ames Hanshaw, 59, also from Modesto, was released from San Joaquin General Hospital with major injuries last week, according to Bob DiRocco, a family friend with residences in Modesto and Lodi. Hanshaw is Lawyer's son.
Lawyer and Hanshaw were returning to Modesto from a relative's wedding in St. Helena when the accident took place, DiRocco said.
Lawyer was described as quite active at 84. She was a liaison for the AARP at the Great Valley Center in Modesto, Hanshaw said.
The Kia was headed east on Highway 12 while the other three vehicles involved in the crash were going west.
No one has been charged in the collision because the investigation has yet to be completed, CHP traffic investigation officer William Hill said Monday.
