Highway 99 has reopened following an accident involving a big-rig north of the Woodbridge Road off-ramp on Friday afternoon.

The wreck occurred around 4:30 p.m., when a wheel or axle flew off of the big-rig while it was going 55 to 60 nph while headed north on Highway 99, witnesses told Officer Martinez of California Highway Patrol.

According to witnesses, the 18-wheeler veered to the right and struck a guard rail underneath the Woodbridge Road overpass. It bounced off the guardrail, steered left and collided with a Mazda sedan, pinning it against the center-divide guard rail.

The cab of the truck flipped onto its side. Fuel, debris and empty water bottles, which the truck was carrying, spilled onto the highway.

The big-rig caught fire, but it was extinguished by Woodbridge firefighters.

The Mazda sedan driver was uninjured. The big-rig driver was transported to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center with minor scratches, Martinez said.
