Lodians use video chat services to connect with family
News-Sentinel reporter Maggie Creamer uses Google+ Hangout to
videochat with her mother, Lois Creamer, and uncle, Barry Bronson,
while working on Thanksgiving.
- Video chat makes working over holidays easier
No one likes to be apart from their family on holidays, but as
the cost of travel continues to increase, I know many of my friends
can simply not make it home for Thanksgiving.
Because someone has to work the holidays at the newspaper, I
also knew I would be spending my Thursday at the office answering
calls about wet papers and putting together the leaf map for
While not being with my family can be a depressing thought,
knowing I can see them on Google+ or other video chat software
makes working on the holiday a little easier.
On Thursday morning, I pulled out my laptop and spent about 20
minutes chatting with my mom, Lois Creamer, and my uncle, Barry
We talked about the turkey preparations. I learned that Barry is
taking piano lessons. I got to see my family's dog, Willie, playing
in the background. And most importantly, I was able to just see
their faces and smile and wave at them.
It has taken a while for my family to fully embrace video
chatting and deal with any technical difficulties that have popped
up, but it is completely worth it.
For anyone with family or friends far away, I encourage you to
set up a web camera, even if it is out of your comfort zone, and
connect with your loved ones, because nothing beats seeing your mom
smile around the holidays.
