A bill to authorize regional government agencies to create a joint-powers authority regarding Amtrak's Central Valley route has been approved by the Assembly Transportation Committee.

Assembly Bill 1779, authored by Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, D-Stockton, would provide a stronger voice in advocating service improvements and expansion, according to Galgiani's office. The JPA would apply to rail service service between Sacramento and Bakersfield, and west to the East Bay.

The bill will be heard by the Assembly Local Government Committee on April 25.

Galgiani is a candidate for the open seat in the newly created 5th State Senate District against Republicans Leroy Ornellas of Tracy and Bill Berryhill of Stockton.
