More than a dozen residences were evacuated Sunday as authorities in northeast Galt investigated a report of a hand grenade inside a residence, according to Galt police.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s enforcement ordinance disposal unit determined at about 2:15 p.m. that the item didn’t put anyone in danger, Galt police Sgt. Chris Smith said.
Officers responded to a call at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, when a woman who was cleaning out her garage on Bay Terrace Drive reported finding something that appeared to be a hand grenade, Smith said. The woman said that it may have been left in the garage by a family member who served in the Vietnam War, Smith said.
Officers immediately blocked off the street and waited for the sheriff’s department, which has greater expertise with explosives than Galt police. The street, located northwest of Walnut Avenue and Park Terrace Drive, was blocked to traffic until authorities cleared the area at about 2:15 p.m., Smith said.
