Two men are in custody after allegedly assaulting an officer and evading police during a brief pursuit on Monday evening.
Brian Gonzalez, 23, and Rigo Lemuz, 19, were apprehended after allegedly driving away from police in a blue Ford Mustang during a traffic stop shortly after 8:30 p.m., said Sgt. Mike Oden of the Lodi Police Department.
A loaded shotgun was found in the vehicle and a third subject remains at large, police said.
"Now you know why these guys ran," said Lt. Steve Carillo as officers searched the vehicle, which crashed between two trees near the intersection of Locust and Church streets.
The incident began when police received a call about subjects in a vehicle who were wearing masks, Oden said. Officers found a vehicle matching the description and pulled it over at Turner Road and Sacramento Street.
While the driver, Gonzalez, initially stopped, he then accelerated down Church Street, Oden said.
"He nearly ran over an officer," he said.
The pursuit ended after the driver attempted to make a hard left turn onto Locust Street and hopped the curb, police said.
Gonzalez and Lemuz were apprehended shortly after the crash, Oden said. A third subject remains at large. No descriptive information on him was available as of press time.
In addition to the weapon, two cell phones and burglary tools were among the items recovered from the vehicle; but no masks were found in the Mustang, Oden said.
Gonzalez could face charges of assault with a deadly weapon for attempting to run over an officer and felony evasion, Oden said. Lemuz could also face charges of obstruction of an officer and evading arrest, police said.
Police would not speculate on where the men were headed or to whom the gun belonged.
