Police reportedly chased down and arrested a man accused of trying to rob a Lodi cigarette store with a hammer Monday.

Police believe Paul Radovich, 27, walked into the Cigarette Store on the 500 block of Lockeford Avenue and rushed toward the counter, Lodi Police Lt. Bill Alexander said.

Witnesses said Radovich brandished a hammer when the cashier tried to intervene, and a fight ensued when a second employee got involved. The cashier sustained minor injuries and Radovich escaped on a bicycle, Alexander said.

Later that evening, around 8 p.m., Lodi police received a disturbance call at a gas station near the intersection of Lockeford Street and Ham Lane.

As officers arrived, a suspect allegedly fled the scene on a bike, Alexander said. During the pursuit, the suspect was cornered and arrested after running into a police car, Alexander said.

Officers determined it was Radovich, who was identified as the suspect in the attempted robbery at the Cigarette Store, Alexander said.

Radovich is being held on suspicious of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and evading police.
