Religious freedom health care division draws praise, criticism from Lodi-area faith leaders

Created on Jan. 18 with the goal of protecting health care providers who feel coerced into participating in services that violate their religious beliefs, a new federal department has drawn support and criticism from Lodi’s religious leaders.

Part of Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights, the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division enables health care professionals to file complaints when they feel forced to participate in assisted suicide, sterilization or abortion procedures that may go against their beliefs. The division enforces existing laws that were previously not enforced, as OCR director Roger Severino explained.
