Four Lodi-area wineries earned special recognition at the 2011 Consumer Wine Awards at Lodi. The March event featured hundreds of wines from around the globe being tasted and rated by a group of consumers.

Loredona earned the Vino Farms Trophy for sustainable winegrowing for its 2009 Viognier and Macchia earned the City of Lodi's Best Zinfandel award for its 2009 "Mischievous" Zinfandel.

Omega Cellars' 2009 Mourvedre Rose earned a best in class award, as did Macchia's 2009 Zinfandel and The Dancing Fox's 2008 reserve Merlot.

The competition is part of a series of tasting events that have been held for the past five years. This year marked the second consecutive year it has been held in Lodi.

An award ceremony for the highest-rated wines will be held May 6 at Hutchins Street Square.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
