Lodi residents looking to get into top physical condition can now work out at a large new gym.

Dozens of people stood in line before 10 a.m. Thursday morning as In-Shape opened the doors of its new location at 1320 W. Lockeford St.

The club had been operating out of a temporary location across the street at 210 Ham Lane for about a year, according to spokesman Dave Garfinkle.

Residents and club members who waited in line were thrilled that the new location had finally opened.

Alexis Vosti has been a club member for years, and had been using one of the company’s seven clubs in Stockton while she waited for the Lockeford Street location to open.

“I’m just really looking forward to another great year of getting fit,” she said.

Washington Elementary School principal Dan Faith was one of the first in line Thursday morning.

A former member of another Lodi gym, Faith said he was looking to get fit again in 2014. He said it had been a couple years since he had last worked out, and Thursday was his first day at In-Shape.

“I’m really happy this has finally opened here,” he said. “Lodi needs new business and more places for people to go to get in shape.”

Located in a space once occupied by Apple Market, the new In-Shape is 32,000 square feet in size with a variety of training areas and features for club members.

The club’s cardiovascular area has dozens of treadmills, ellipticals and incline trainers. What’s unique about the cardio area, Garfinkle said, is the giant matrix television on the wall for members to watch while they use the equipment.

The matrix television is comprised of nine 50-inch flat screens and is flanked by several other 50-inch screens. Each will show a different program to meet club members’ tastes while they work out, Garfinkle said.

Other features the club offers include a functional training area for members to focus on the abdomen, as well a SHAPES fitness area, where members can exercise in private.

Garfinkle said the functional training and SHAPES areas are “gyms within a gym” that In-Shape offers to provide its members with all-inclusive workout options, unlike gyms like Crossfit, which are focused solely on functional training.

In-Shape also offers a large classroom for group exercises, as well as a stationary bicycle room with 40 bikes.

Of course, no gym is complete without free weights and weight machines, which are located throughout the building.

In-Shape also provides a kids area, providing youngsters a place to play Wii, basketball or other activities while mom and dad exercise.

The gym also includes an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, with spacious locker rooms for men and women.

Garfinkle said In-Shape prides itself on being family-friendly, not only through the accessible features and services it offers, but through its staff as well.

There are about 60 employees at the new location, and Garfinkle said about 90 percent of them are from the Lodi area.

“When we open in a new community, we believe in hiring new employees from within that community,” he said.

In-Shape has about 1,000 members at its new location. Many of those members have used the temporary location on Ham Lane as well as the March Lane location in Stockton for months while waiting for the new gym to open.

“We’re unbelievably excited to be open at our new location,” Garfinkle said. “We’re confident all our members and their families will use this facility as often as possible. We think all of Lodi will love our gym and its staff.”

Garfinkle said In-Shape will be open 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

In-Shape’s new location will not be the only new gym opening in Lodi this year. In February, Spare Time Inc., the parent company of Twin Arbors Athletic Club, plans to open a new 6,000-square-foot location at 369 Lower Sacramento Road in the shopping center that houses Raley’s.

Twin Arbors is located at 1900 S. Hutchins St., with a tennis club located at 20240 Cochran Road and a Fitness Works gym at 429 W. Lockeford St.
