With the help of a Good Samaritan, two men were arrested Tuesday after allegedly trying to snatch a woman's purse by force near the Galt Market earlier in the day.

"The citizen who helped did a good thing," said Lt. Jim Uptegrove, of the Galt Police Department. "He helped get suspect and vehicle descriptions and a license plate number."

The subjects, whose identities have not yet been released by the Galt Police Department, were apprehended in Stockton by the California Highway Patrol. They were arrested for strong-arm robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle, Uptegrove said. Their identities are being withheld until police can show their pictures to victims and confirm they have the right people in custody, he said.

The incident took place around 9 a.m. when a black male approached the victim and attempted to grab her purse. The victim screamed and drew the attention of a passerby, who came to her aid as the suspect was leaving, Uptegrove said.

Even though the suspect struggled to grab the purse, the victim maintained control of her property, police said.

The Good Samaritan followed the suspects, who were driving a 2002 Cadillac with Washington license plates, to Northbound Highway 99 before losing sight of the vehicle, Uptegrove said.

When authorities ran the license plate number the citizen provided, Uptegrove said, they determined it was reported stolen by the Stockton Police Department. Although a .38 caliber handgun was believed to be in the vehicle, authorities found no weapon when the suspects were taken into custody, Uptegrove said.

The male suspect is described as a black male in his late 30s or early 40s with a bald or shaved head. The second suspect is described as a heavyset white female with blonde hair. Police haven't ruled out if the male suspect is the same one who attempted to rob the Raley's supermarket in Galt earlier this month. That attempted robbery was unsuccessful and no one was hurt in the incident.

Although Uptegrove was grateful for the citizen assisting with the arrest, he said people must be careful when trying to help because they can easily become a victim themselves.

"We appreciate his role in helping us arrest them," he said. "But we always caution people about getting too involved in situations like this."
