Former and current city leaders, a past fire chief, a school principal, neighbors and spouses offered support that propelled eight Lodi City Council hopefuls into candidacy.

That support, given in the form of signatures on nomination papers, offers insight into where candidates have found backing in the community.

Pat Patrick, president and CEO of the Lodi Chamber of Commerce, appears on forms for both incumbent Councilman Larry Hansen and challenger Steve Jarrett.

Patrick said he signed both because he respects what Hansen has done for the city for the past four years, and because the candidate lives a few doors down from the Patrick household. Patrick knows Jarrett through his membership in the chamber.

"I know his character," Patrick said of Jarrett, "and I had no problem signing either one of their forms."

Patrick said he would have been equally willing to sign for businessmen Phil Katzakian and Kevin Stevens, both of whom are also chamber members.

Hansen also received signatures from former Woodbridge Fire Chief Henry J. Wright, former Lodi City Manager Tom Peterson, and former mayor and school principal Walter Katnich, and former Mayor Randy Snider. Peterson also signed for Mayor Susan Hitchcock. Her forms were also signed by Sheree Flemmer, a school principal, and her husband Jerry Glenn.

"I'm just very humbled that people are willing to sign my papers and endorse my re-election," Hansen said.

Lodi City Councilman John Beckman and wife Nancy Beckman, executive director of the Lodi Conference and Visitor's Bureau appear on candidate Steve Jarrett's papers.

Lodi News-Sentinel columnist Taj Khan signed for real estate agent Roger Khan, and said he would have signed the forms of any other candidate who approached him in the interest of providing options for voters.

"Anybody who would have come to my door I would have signed for," said Taj Khan, of no relation to the candidate. "I like to have as many people run as possible."

Attorney-activist Ann Cerney and Dawn Squires' names show up on Jane Lea's papers. Lea and Squires are the force behind an initiative to rescind the city's 38 percent water rate increase.

Names have been sorted alphabetically and may not be in the same order as they appear on the candidates' nomination forms.

"I think anybody who signs anybody's nomination forms means they believe they're the ones who are going to go and make a change," Lea said.

Fellow candidate John Johnson and former Lodi Mayor Keith Land also appear on Lea's forms.

Among Johnson's signatures is that of Lodi Firefighter Pete Itrurraran.

Candidates need signatures from 20 registered voters to qualify for the ballot. They can submit up to 30. The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters verifies that the individuals are registered to vote.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
