At the Veterans Day ceremony, two non-commissioned enlisted
personnel with the California Army Guard's Military Funeral Detail
folded the flag 13 times, just like if they would at a funeral.
It is the highest honors next to a 21-gun salute for a military
funeral, said Bill Selling, a veteran.
Selling listed what every fold in the flag means:
Fold 1: A symbol of life.
Fold 2: A symbol of our belief in the eternal
Fold 3: Made in honor and remembrance of the
veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of life toward the
defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
Fold 4: Represents our weaker nature for as
American citizens trusting in God. It is to him we turn in times of
peace as well as times of war for his divine guidance.
Fold 5: A tribute to our country.
Fold 6: Represents where our hearts lie. It is
with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United
States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one
Nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
Fold 7: A tribute to our armed forces. For it
is true that the armed forces protect our country and protect our
flag against all enemies whether they be found within or without
the boundaries of the Republic.
Fold 8: A tribute to the one who entered into
the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of
day. And to honor mothers for who it flies on Mother's Day.
Fold 9: A tribute to womanhood. For it is have
been thought, through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion, the
character of men and women who have made this country great have
Fold 10: A tribute to father. For he too has
given his sons and daughters to the defense of our country since
they were first born.
Fold 11: In the eyes of the Hebrew citizen, it
represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King
Solomon and glorifies in their eyes the God of Abraham, Isaac,
Fold 12: The eyes of the Christian citizen
represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies in their eyes God
the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
Fold 13: When the flag is completely folded,
the stars are utmost reminding us of our national motto, "In God We
