For the first time, orders for Spaans Cookie Company’s holiday pies, rolls and other desserts can be placed online this year.
The Galt-based bakery sold 800 pies and 24,000 rolls last Thanksgiving, but each of those customers had to either call in their orders or stop by the retail store.
“They were bound by our business hours,” Rick Spaans said of the regular Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. period. “I’ve been trying to bring our company to the 21st century. We want to maintain that old-fashioned feel, but still be current. A lot of people work, so they can’t just make a call in the middle of the day.”
Starting Nov. 1, orders can be placed at any time on the company’s website.
Customers will have the same opportunity to choose a pick-up time from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 25 through Nov. 27.
Spaans, who returned to the family business nearly five years ago, is moving the company along technology-wise. He recently launched an email ordering reminder service that already has 500 subscribers. He’s also improved the website to allow customers to order and ship cookies anywhere in the country.
With that, he anticipates many will appreciate online ordering for their Thanksgiving baked goods.
“(From) everything I’ve heard, people are excited about it,” Spaans said.
At this time, customers can only order for Thanksgiving. But after that holiday, the website will be available for Christmas orders.
Customers can also come into the retail store or place orders by phone, but Spaans expects the new service to free up employees, as well.
“We’re so busy during that time. Our phones are ringing nonstop and people get frustrated when they’re put on hold for long periods of time,” Spaans said. “I think it’s going to make it a lot easier.”
To order Thanksgiving pies or rolls, visit www.spaanscookies.com beginning Nov. 1 and click on the “purchase products tab.”
