A Lodi man was stabbed in the hand after a scuffle with a suspected would-be burglar, police said.

Lodi police responded to a report of a possible interrupted burglary on the 0 block of Avena Avenue early Wednesday.

They found the homeowner looking like he had just gotten out of a fight, said police.

The homeowner said he heard noises in his backyard and went out to check at around 4:45 a.m. He saw a man in the yard and sprang into action to chase the intruder out.

According to police, the homeowner said the suspect was carrying a bicycle identical to one owned by the homeowner's child, which slowed his attempt to flee. The homeowner caught up to the suspect and they got into a scuffle. The suspect pulled out a buck knife and stabbed the homeowner in the hand, police said. At that point, the fight broke off and the suspect was able to get away with the bike.

Police on the scene found a knife on the ground and a flashlight. They believe the suspect was attempting to enter the garage when he was interrupted by the homeowner.

When he saw the suspect with a bike like the one his garage, the homeowner assumed it was a theft, police said. But the bike was still in the garage when police checked.

No arrests have been made in this case.

I just got off the phone with my brother, he & his family live in this neighborhood and knows the victim. This was the victims third break-in in about 2-3 years.

Home, Garage, & Car burglaries have been on the rise in this area for about 3-4 years. He heard via his neighborhood watch group that recently (this month) that one family had three bikes stolen from their garage during the night, and another home was entered through an open window and a jewlery box taken.

CLOSE your windows, lock your doors & backyard gates, and do not leave valuables in your car.
