Civil trial begins for Lodi school bus driver

Opening statements began on Monday in a civil suit involving a former Lodi Unified School District bus driver who was previously convicted in criminal court.

Attorneys John Manly and Vince Finaldi are representing a special needs student who was 9 years old when bus driver Richard Dale Evans sexually assaulted her.

Evans' assault on the victim was captured by a video camera on board the school bus, according to prosecuting attorneys John Manly and Vince Finaldi. He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison for his crimes.

The civil lawsuit on behalf of the girl alleges that Lodi Unified has a policy of not watching the video footage recorded by cameras on its school buses and had refused to review the footage upon a direct request from the victim's parents, attorneys say.
