A Whittier man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl was arrested by San Joaquin County Sheriff's detectives in Lodi on Friday morning.
The man was identified as 29-year-old Jose Javier Cortez Ontiveros.
The name of the 14-year-old victim has not been released due to her age and because she is a potential sexual assault victim.
According to a press release by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, approximately three weeks ago, the 14-year-old girl began an online communication with Ontiveros through a social networking site.
The press release goes on to state that on April 15, Ontiveros allegedly picked the teen up at her residence while her parents were gone and then proceeded to sexually assault her at an undisclosed location before returning her home roughly four hours later.
As she was being dropped off, the victim kissed Ontiveros goodbye and told him she would run away with him, according to the press release.
According to Sheriff's Department spokesman Les Garcia, the parents of the victim initially reported her as a runaway.
But when she returned home, the case began to unfold, Garcia said.
On April 16, detectives from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department began posing as the girl and continued chatting with Ontiveros on the social networking site.
Ontiveros had plans to marry the victim and start a family with her, the press release stated, and he made arrangements to meet her in Lodi.
On Friday, Ontiveros told the girl to bring an identification and her birth certificate with her to the designated location, the release said, and told her that they would live in Texas.
Later Friday, at approximately 9 a.m., Ontiveros arrived at the pre-arranged meeting location where Sheriff's detectives waited. Ontiveros was taken into custody without incident, and he has refused to make any statements.
The 14-year-old was not anywhere near the meeting location.
Ontiveros is a truck driver for a company in Southern California. The Sheriff's Department did not name the company.
Ontiveros faces charges of lewd acts with a child and kidnapping with the intent to commit another crime, among other charges. He is not allowed bail.
He is scheduled to appear in court on April 24 in Department Z in Stockton.
