A News-Sentinel reporter sniffed into 14 glasses of wine and tried as best he could what each glass of wine smells like.

Could it be peach? Cherry? Mint? Vanilla?

On the other hand, other glasses smelled like tobacco, black pepper, green grass and even smoke.

Visitors participating in the LoCA Road Trip through dozens of Lodi-area wineries can participate in the wine-sniffing contest each Friday through Sunday in September, plus Oct. 5 at Kidder Family Winery in Lockeford.

About 30 visitors to Kidder sniffed the wine and entered the contest (you may get a prize if you get all 14 right). Seven people got them all right, while others missed on all the glasses. The News-Sentinel reporter got only two of them right. He scored on chocolate and black pepper.

Some 50 wineries and establishments that serve Lodi wine are participating in what is called the LoCA Road Trip — each with different attractions. For example,  you can try Old Ghost vertical tasting at Klinker Brick Winery, a scavenger hunt at The Lucas Winery, a tour of 19th-century antique furnishings at Berghold Vineyards and a port blending class at d’Art Wines.

Berghold Vineyards, off Highway 12 in Victor, planned to have visitors ride a 1950 Allis Chalmers tractor on Sunday, but the battery died. However, Kay Berghold reports that adults and children alike had a great time on Saturday, when the tractor was operational.

However, Berghold has plenty for people to admire. Owners Joe and Kay Berghold grew up in the Philadelphia area, where most of their antiques — circa 1860-90 — originated. They have a couple of 172-year-old chairs made by Kay Berghold’s great-great-great-grandmother. And the vineyard has a whole lot more.

For $15, people can purchase the Road Trip “passport,” which will allow people to visit any of the participating wineries during the next several weekends. For more information, visit www.lodiroadtrip.com, and for the activities schedule, visit www.lodiroadtrip.com/activities-calendar.
