A man in custody at the Lodi Jail was pronounced dead after officers found him unresponsive, said Lt. Chris Piombo of the Lodi Police Department.
James Romero, 43, was arrested at 5 p.m. on Tuesday after officers say he was found trespassing in a Lodi residence. Officers learned he had an active warrant for violation of parole, said Piombo.
During a routine jail check, Romero was unresponsive, police said. Officers began resuscitation efforts, and Romero was transferred to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
As with any in-custody death, the countywide critical incident protocol has been invoked, which calls for a team of investigators to look into the issue. The case is being investigated by a task force comprised of representatives from the Lodi Police Department, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and San Joaquin County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.
