Lodi City Attorney Steve Schwabauer was injured in a bicycle accident Sunday while participating in a fundraiser ride.
Paramedics received a call at 12:19 p.m. Sunday to respond to a bicycle accident at Armstrong and Davis roads, said David Durand, spokesperson for AMR.
Schwabauer told paramedic supervisor Steve Riley that he was in a sprint to the finish line when the chain on his bike got lodged, causing him to lose his balance and fall, Durand said. Schwabauer grazed another rider, but the other rider did not suffer any significant injuries, Durand said.
City Manager Rad Bartlam said he does not know how long Schwabauer will be out of work and cannot disclose the attorney's injuries because it is a personnel manner.
Schwabauer was in a charity ride to benefit Emma Greene, the 2011 Lodi High valedictorian who suffers from cystic fibrosis, city spokesman Jeff Hood said. Greene received a lung and liver transplant last October.
About 60 riders participated in the informal fundraiser organized by some bike groups in the area, Hood said.
Durand said that Schwabauer was wearing safety gear, including a helmet and reflective bicycle clothing. He encouraged everyone to put on a helmet before going on a ride.
"There is a huge message here. If you are going bicycle riding, safety gear works, especially helmets. They save lives," Durand said.
