Close to a dozen Lodi Unified School district schools will be participating in today's San Joaquin County Science Olympiad Division A2 competition. It is for students in grades 3 through 6 and is open to the public.

In all, 59 teams are competing in 24 events spread over five 60-minute sections, including events known as "Barge Building" and "Can Race."

The purpose of the Science Olympiad is to engage students in hands-on assessment, out-of-class science experience, a variety of science disciplines and cooperative activities.

The competition begins at 9 this morning and runs through 2 p.m. at McNair High School, 9550 Ronald E. McNair Way, Stockton. The awards ceremony is at 3:15 p.m.

The following Lodi Unified elementary schools are participating: Elkhorn, John Muir, Julia Morgan, Manilo Silva, Podesta Ranch, Sutherland Elementary, Vinewood, Wagner-Holt, Woodbridge, Mosher and Reese. Families of students, teachers and community members are invited to attend.

LOL what is really bad is that some of these students and their families have moved out of the district but have not changed their emergency cards. Does that make it a fair competition?

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
