Astronaut Jose Hernandez, who grew up as a farmworker in Stockton and Lodi, will announce his candidacy for the 10th Congressional District on Monday.

Hernandez, a Democrat, is scheduled to make the announcement at 11 a.m. today at the Modesto Centre Plaza, 1000 L St., and at 1 p.m. at the Tracy Transit Station, 50 E. Sixth St. at North Central Avenue.

The 10th District extends generally from Tracy and Manteca south to Turlock and Patterson.

Hernandez was a crew member on the space shuttle in 2009. He was born in French Camp and is a Franklin High School graduate in Stockton. His parents live on the outskirts of Lodi northeast of Highway 99 and Eight Mile Road.

Hernandez received a full college education despite not speaking English until he was 12 years old. He was a farmworker with his parents and siblings on fields throughout San Joaquin County, including the Lodi area.

very heavy into anything that's got the word "global" in it, such as "global warming."

United Nations: That's got global running all through it.

When he stepped off the shuttle, announced to the press demands for global stuff.
