Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, has introduced a bill to help ailing communities by extending federal empowerment zone designations for three years, according to a news release from McNerney’s office.
The Revitalize Our Cities Act is intended to help the cities that have been hit the hardest as a result of the economic downturn. The legislation would allow an additional 20 cities to participate in the federal empowerment zone program. Eligibility is limited to cities where unemployment and foreclosure rates are higher than their respective states’ averages.
The act has support from Lodi Chamber of Commerce CEO Pat Patrick, along with the cities of Stockton and Antioch.
The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Gary Miller, R-Rancho Cucamonga.
