Ebonitra Jones

Posted: Friday, September 9, 2011 6:23 pm | Updated: 5:47 am, Wed Sep 14, 2011.

After being found unconscious in the street with an infant in her lap, a Lodi woman and mother of four was arrested on charges of deserting her children on Friday morning.

Ebonitra Janette Jones, 36, was found by deputies on the 19000 block of North Windwood Drive in Woodbridge shortly after midnight, said Dep. Les Garcia of the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department.

Jones and the infant were taken to an area hospital for observation. During the investigation, officers determined Jones had left three other children under the ages of 14 at a vacant residence on the 100 block of South Corinth Avenue in Lodi, police said.

The three children and infant were placed in the care of Child Protective Services and have been taken to Mary Graham Children's Shelter, Garcia said.

The Sheriff's Department would not disclose the specific ages or genders of the children.

While Jones was found unconscious, she was not arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance. Garcia would not speculate if Jones was intoxicated and patient privacy laws prevent officials from discussing medical reports with the media, he said.

Jones faces felony charges of failure to provide for a child and deserting a child under the age of 14 with intent to abandon it. She is being held on a $162,000 bond in San Joaquin County Jail. She is tentatively scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

This woman "left three other children under the ages of 14 at a vacant residence?" She needs to go directly to jail so I am happy she's being charged with felonies. Of course there will be deals made to reduce the charges to misdemeanors (or less) and she'll waste more taxpayer dollars going through rehab that will do little or nothing to help her or her children.

Of course the father of these children needs to be found and to the degree available forced to provide for them. But what will happen is they'll become wards of the court and bounce from one home to another subjected to who knows what abuse from those paid to care for them. And the cycle will continue as they have children.

The solution? " " (Fill in the blank)

Best for children to be with CPS. This lady needs to straighten out. San Joaquin County can provide help if no dead beat dad around.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
