Media in Canada have reported that the Toronto Zoo elephants expected to be moved to Galt-based Performing Animal Welfare Society could arrive by late summer.
Arrangements for the move to PAWS’ San Andreas site came to a halt this spring when its owners refused to turn over medical records for its animals, some of which have died while living there. However, zoo officials reportedly reviewed the documents late last month.
The Toronto City Council already signed off on the plan in October 2011, but it has been held up by zoo officials who questioned whether PAWS is the best place for the trio of aging elephants. Animal activist Bob Barker has said he will pay $880,000 to transport the pachyderms by jumbo jet, but there is apparently only one jet in the country big enough to do so.
