By 2016, a new entertainment complex will anchor Old Town in Galt. Major retailers will be attracted to Twin Cities and Simmerhorn roads commercial infrastructure improvements. And the industrial area will have at least five niche entrepreneurial businesses serving local markets.

Those are among the plans in the city’s newly released Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. Once submitted to and approved by the federal Economic Development Administration, the city will be able to compete for grants and other incentives to meet these goals and others outlined in the document.

At Tuesday’s regular Galt City Council meeting, staff solicited public comment on an updated plan from 2008 before sending it onto the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Committee for adoption.

“This has been the goal of the city council for the last year,” City Manager Jason Behrmann said. “This will allow us to build infrastructure and bring in jobs.”

That was among the top item discussed in creating the plan.

It is scheduled to be adopted Oct. 28 by the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy committee, which is made up of community members, business owners and elected officials. They have been working with Chabin Concepts, the same Chico-based economic development firm that oversaw the 2008 report.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
