After 29 years of service, Lodi Fire Marshal Verne Person retires
Verne Person officially retired in December after 29 years of service as Lodi fire marshal.

Family: Wife of 25 years, Dawnette, is a nurse practitioner. He has four grown children — one in Oregon, two in the Lodi area and one in Nicaragua serving with the Peace Corps. He also has four grandchildren.
Hobbies: Golfing, playing softball on a city league, volunteering at Calvary Bible Church.
Career: Hired as a Lodi firefighter in December 1977. Retired in December 2006, but still working part-time until his replacement is found.

Three decades ago, Verne Person was laying carpet, thinking that he did not want to spend his career working on his knees and hauling carpet.
He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life. Things changed when he met a retired Oakland firefighter and struck up a conversation.
