There are new 2011 pertussis (or whooping cough) immunization requirements for students for the 2011-12 school year only. All students entering seventh through 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap booster shot before starting school in the fall.
The requirement goes into effect July 1 for all students attending public or private schools. It does not, however, affect those enrolled in summer school. It can be met by receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine on or after the child’s 10th birthday.

This requirement really angers me. We have a FEW hundred cases of whooping cough in infants over the past couple of years and now EVERYONE 6th grade and beyond in the school district has to be vaccinated every year in order to go to school. Unbelievable. Whooping cough is not deadly to children that age - if they do contract it, it's the same as getting a cold with a cough. The vaccination schedule is already out of control for these kids - why are we adding to it?

Parents can sign the Personal Beliefs Exemption Form (CDPH 8261)

There are risks to every vaccine. Read the package inserts before allowing the vaccine.

A prior Tdap vaccine on or after the 7th birthday, not 10th, fulfills the requirement for 7-12th grade. Or, parents can choose to sign the exemption form.
"Children who received a dose of Tdap on or after their 7th birthday will be considered to have met the new school requirement."
