Due to forecasts of heavy rain this weekend, surges of water were released from Camanche Reservoir into the Mokelumne River on Friday.
East Bay Municipal Utility District, the agency that operates Camanche, conducted water releases to free up storage space in the reservoir in anticipation of the rain, said Charles Hardy, an EBMUD spokesman.
The releases began Friday morning and will continue through the early afternoon. Rates of water being released from Camanche increased from 2,400 cubic feet per second to more than 3,000 cubic feet per second during that time.
According to AccuWeather, a private forecasting firm, thunderstorms are expected today and the rain is expected continue through Monday.
