A gang-related shooting on Lodi's Eastside on Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of one man after he was shot several times in the chest.
At approximately 3:11 p.m., Lodi police responded to a call that shots had been fired in the area of Pine Street and Central Avenue, according to Sgt. Doug Chinn.
Police found an unresponsive man who had been shot several times in the chest, Chinn said.
Paramedics transferred the man to Lodi Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Lodi police Sgt. David Griffin confirmed.
Though the name of the victim has yet to be released, police said the man was between the ages of 19 and 20. According to Chinn, the victim had affiliations with the Norteño gang, but police do not know his complete gang background.
After the shots were fired, several gang members ran east down a nearby alley, Chinn said. One male individual was detained at the scene, but police could not comment on whether that person was taken into police custody or if he had been charged with a crime.
Witnesses said the victim was African-American, though police would not comment on the race of the victim.
Kelly Mays and another neighbor were out walking along Central Avenue when they heard shots fired and saw the man on the ground.
"It's sad to see kids fighting like that, even adults. There's little kids," said Mays. "It seems like they're younger and younger these days."
