Although he likely won’t be on the streets until August when his training is completed, the Galt Police Department has obtained a new police dog.

Hunter, shown off at last weekend’s Galt Strawberry Festival, is from the Netherlands. He will train with newly appointed K9 Officer Nathan Meyerdick.

He and fellow Officer Dan Carter were recently named to the two positions left vacant by Officer Brian Nino, who moved to Monterey, and fallen Officer Kevin Tonn, who was killed in January while responding to a burglary call. Their dogs are both retired now.

Hunter was purchased by Foothills K9 Association, an area nonprofit that works to raise money for local police department canines. When he was killed, Tonn was already working with the group to replace Bo, Nino’s aging dog.

Fundraising is continuing to purchase a second dog for Galt. Minimum donations are $20 for T-shirts and $30 for hoodies. Email julie@foothillsk9.org for more information.

Donations may also be made by mail to: Foothills K9 Association, 5098 Foothills Blvd. No. 3-424, Roseville, CA 95747. Note “Galt” in the check memo.
