Thirteen Lodi wineries are celebrating International Tempranillo Day this weekend and invite local wine lovers to discover the Spanish varietal.

The Lodi Tour of Tempranillo is focused on tasting this red wine from a number of different producers in Lodi. Lodi growers pride themselves on a diverse collection of wine grapes. As Wine Enthusiast’s 2015 Wine Region of the Year, Lodi was recognized for that diversity and experimentation.

Tempranillo may be well known among wine bloggers and Spanish wine aficionados, but it is just starting to attract the attention of the American consumer.

Tempranillo is also known as Cencibel, Valdepenas, Tinta del Pais and Ull de Llebre — “Eye of the Hare.” It has thick and tannic skins that add a complexity of aromas and color to the finished wine. It is a consummate blender, sharing and enhancing the profile of wines made from other varieties.

Tempranillo is often referred to as the “Cabernet of Spain” due to its widespread planting and noble status as the backbone of Spanish reds. It is actually the fourth most planted wine grape in the world.

However, California wineries are just beginning to explore the varietal. Less than 1,000 acres of Tempranillo are planted in the state.

Thirteen Lodi-based wineries now produce Tempranillo wines, and they are participating in this event from Friday through Sunday. Visitors can stop by any of the tasting rooms to start a self-guided tour. A complimentary guidebook will be available at all participating wineries, listing special offerings by each winery.
