Who: Jan Haynes, Joanne Ciboch, Rosalie Atwood and Carole Kiefer.
Destination: Michigan and Mackinac Island.
The trip: In September, Kiefer and I (Atwood) flew to St. Joseph, Mich. W spent nine days with Ciboch, who is a member of The Economic Club. She surprised us with dinner tickets to hear Karl Rove speak in Benton Township, Mich. His presentation was non-partisan. He said the next president would be chosen by events in the nation. We certainly had no idea what was going to happen after we returned home. We had the opportunity to meet and speak with him.
Then, we left for a tour of Mackinac Island. We stepped back in time. We took a ferry to the island. There were no cars allowed. The mode of transportation was Belgium horses and carriages. We spent three nights at the majestic Grand Hotel that was built in 1887. The movie, "Somewhere in Time," was filmed on the island. They did not need sets for indoor or outdoor filming, as all was dated from the 1800s. The town village was picturesque. We had a tremendous time.
We returned home to Ciboch's home and nine of us surprised Kiefer with a surprise birthday dinner.
We were so pleased to have seen the Grand Hotel with its classic columns, ornate cupolas, gables and balconies.
Each of us were in awe of how fortunate it was for us to have spent time there. We are left with the warmest of memories.
Our next trip will be to Seattle.
