LOS ANGELES (AP) — An unexpected blast of northerly winds across parts of Southern California has eased after toppling some trees and causing localized power outages.

The National Weather Service says a phenomenon called a standing mountain wave occurred Sunday night, allowing high-speed winds from the mid-levels of the atmosphere to reach the surface.

Some mountain ridgetop sensors reported gusts from 80 mph to 90 mph before the wave dissipated around 2 a.m. Monday.

High-wind warnings have been replaced by advisories for winds between 20 mph and 35 mph, with gusts up to about 50 mph.

The offshore flow is expected to bring sunny weather with above-normal temperatures, and building high pressure in the Great Basin will bring Santa Ana winds to Southern California on Tuesday, with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s.
