Is keeping General Mills in town worth $7 million? New Albany, Ind. has decided to find out.

The New Albany city council voted 5-2 on Tuesday to move ahead with a bond plan to keep their town’s plant from closing.

The vote doesn’t mean the city is making a firm commitment to offer the $7 million to General Mills, nor does it mean the food processing company has agreed to accept the offer.

However, it does move the process forward to the New Albany Redevelopment Commission, which would put together a financial plan and gather the details before returning the bond proposal to the city council for a final vote, according to reporter Daniel Suddeath of the city’s newspaper, the News and Tribune.

There will still be at least one more vote from the city council before the bond would be approved, he reported.

Such a bond would not be a possibility in Lodi because the decision to close the Turner Road plant has been finalized, according to General Mills.
