On June 16, Dr. Rick and Liz Castelannelli joined Dr. Vincent, Denise and Michael Pennisi for a week in New York City to attend the graduation of the Pennisi’s twin boys, Vincent and Dominic, from medical school.
Also in attendance were the boys’ uncle Steve and aunt Cathy Malucchi from San Francisco. Both Vincent and Dominic are graduates of Tokay High School. The ceremony and following reception were held at New York’s famous Lincoln Center. Joining the group for dinner later that evening were tow more doctors in the Pennisi family, Tony Pennisi and Ralph Squifieri, both of whom are retired and living in the New York area.
Highlights of the trip
Seeing the sights, including the Empire State Building, Central Park, 14,000 people in Times Square doing yoga for the summer solstice, the nearly completed new Freedom Tower, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Of special interest was dinner in the Little Italy neighborhood of New York and spending time in the fabulous Eataly in Italy market/restaurants first served in Turin, Italy. The New York location is co-owned by famous chefs Mario Batali and Lidia Bastianich and her son Joseph.
In addition to the twins’ graduation, riding the New York subway, watching bocce ball in the park and finding both the Pennisi and Castelanelli names on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor on Ellis Island. Very memorable indeed was spending an entire week with seven other adults in a small, two bedroom flat in Queens with a tiny kitchen and one bathroom.
