We went the California Capital Airshow in Sacramento as guests of our grandfather, Wendell Houck, 92 — who was honored as air traffic control chief during the Berlin Airlift in 1948.
There were families of German survivors of the Berlin Airlift, as well as families of the workers and pilots. We had our own tent and a special ceremony as part of the program. The day was fantastic, with hands on areas for knowledge and enjoyment.
There were at least 100 planes you could go through and enjoy seeing. One of the most memorable events was a plane racing a school bus with a jet engine. The plane went 265 mph, but the school bus went 350 mph. The school bus won.
It was a fantastic day of fun, food, family and fantastic feats involving airplanes, jets, helicopters and parachutists. I would go again in a minute.
