PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have taken into custody a violent sex offender who cut off his court-ordered GPS monitoring device and disappeared, until he was found under a mattress in the Antelope Valley.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1A5wECS ) that deputies found 43-year-old Joseph Serapiglia on Wednesday while checking a house in Palmdale after a burglar alarm went off.

When authorities to inspect a 2:30 a.m. alarm, they found a man seemingly under the influence nearby and questioned him.

The deputies detained him after he couldn't answer questions and began searching the house. Inside they found Serapiglia, who gave several false names before confessing to his true identity.

Serapiglia was released after serving 23 years on a 42-year sentence for rape and stabbing. Earlier this week he removed his GPS tracker and fled.
